If all you want is pull-ups and dips, then going to one of those chain sporting good stores will allow you to get a pull-up/dip/push-up station for 99 bucks.

It takes some time and two people to assemble it. The good thing is you can work on modified l-seats at the dip station.

Not as good as rings by any means, but a good starter piece.
