Re: triathlon deaths

What about the big picture? What's worse for your health... a lifetime of competitive endurance exercise or a lifetime of eating vending machine food?

Re: Tabata Hills and Weak Lungs!

I think 100% effort hill sprints are great for Tabata intervals if you're on the right hill. The idea of running up fast and then walking all the way down just won't work for a 20/10 protocol... not...

Re: Holding your breath?

A doctor with experience treating athletes told me breath holding on heavy lifts might eventually lead to heart problems..... I forgot if it was the left ventricle or the right that would grow (which...

Re: Hypertrophy Ranking

I understand the rep range theory for strength vs. hypertrophy. I happen to think it's very overrated. What I'm trying to figure out is what exercises do elite gymnasts do reps of? I assumed they...

Re: Hypertrophy Ranking

Roger,

I don't really know how elite gymnasts train. When you say heavier loads what do you mean.. and for reps are you talking about on dips, chin ups, or more complicated sequences? Can you...

Re: Don't do the deadlift?

Louie has been very open about his steroid use in his lectures and interviews on bodybuilding and powerlifting sites.

Re: Don't do the deadlift?

I think it's fun to listen to Louie and watch those guys lift but I'm pretty sure they take performance enhancing drugs. Just like with bodybuilding, you might not need to do the most athletic lifts...

Re: Hypertrophy Ranking

Roger,

Can you give me some examples of how the training has changed? I still see some elite gymnasts with a decent amount of upper body muscle mass.

Re: Hypertrophy Ranking

Perhaps a better title would be "Who would have the most muscle mass"? Anyway, I'm just curious about what people think the impact the five different sports would have on muscle growth.

Can...

Re: Hypertrophy Ranking

Perhaps I didn't make it clear... all five athletes are eating the same amount of the same foods. They're all getting the same amount of sleep. Everything is the same execept their sport. Silly,...

Just a thought/concern here about eating/drinking more to put on mass...

I'm a big fan of intense exercise and drinking whole milk but are you asking your body to do something it really doesn't...

Yes, it's an impossible question... so many variables. There's no way everything else would be the same, but...

In my scenario.... The eating and sleeping habits would be exactly the same even...

Hypertrophy Ranking

Here's one of my favorite exercise questions adapted for CF. I know hypertrophy and bodybuilding have been discussed a lot lately but I don't think quite like this.....

If there were five...

Re: Experiment

It is interesting. Some people recover well with a cool down and only slightly better when seated while others have a much bigger difference between those two methods. I'll usually get around a...

Re: Running/working out at night

One of the problems with late night workouts is you might not get the same HGH release while sleeping that you would with an earlier workout. I've heard it helps to be in a really deep state of...

Re: Arguing that XFit is 'enough' cardio

I try to explain to people who love their "cardio" about the hormonal effects of different types of exercise. Being in an aerobic zone probably isn't going to do much to stimulate hormones like...

Knurling difference of Pendlay bars?

Can someone tell me how the knurling feels on the Pendlay Economy Bar vs. the two Crossfit discount bars (black oxide, plain steel)? I prefer softer knurling like the Eleiko elite and hate the harsh...

Re: Anybody know about GameSpeed in Concord, CA?

This may be a bad thread but it does raise a few interesting questions about training young athletes. How much is too much for kids? I've trained a few high school athletes and the challenge was...

Re: Another Marathon runner dead

Good question. I think it depends what you mean by "better". I'm not convinced jogging is any better for health than no exercise at all. Maybe you're talking about the personal enjoyment of distance...

Re: Another Marathon runner dead

All sports can be dangerous when taken to the extreme... I think we all know that by now. For some reason, our country has had a bizarre love affair with jogging. Many people still think if they...

It's not healthy in the long run. Too much emphasis on competition leads to chasing numbers, which leads to overtraining. It's impossible to prove but I...

If the goal is fitness, 3/1 or 2/1 might be the way to go. If the goal is health, 1/1 is probably better. You could add more exercise to your on day to equal about an hour. If my work schedule...

If early mornings are the only time you can workout, I guess it's better than nothing... but, cortisol is highest around 6am. Doing intense workouts can raise it even higher. You might be doing...
