Re: CrossFit in the Inner City (Newark, NJ)

I would check out Steve's Club, Steve is a great guy and they have been growing out to other locations (I am pretty sure each location is run by the volunteer that starts it...

Re: Transition from Bodybuilding to Crossfit

If they want to bodybuild they should follow a bodybuilding routine.

If they want to improve performance, then they should follow Crossfit.

Re: How to reduce vibration and noise from 2nd floor box

DON'T LEASE IT!

You can use the search function and see tons of stories - people have tried an expensive process where they cut troughs in the floors, foam, noise cancelling walls - nothing works. ...

Re: The always slow class

Along the lines of what Sean says - most gyms start with too many classes because they are trying to compete on times with other gyms. People are more flexible then they let on if they want to do...

Re: 1 piece of equipment you cannot live without?

Please make the 20x24x30s plyo boxes. It is really simple - figure out the cuts you'll need. Then go to homedepot and buy the wood and ask for the cuts to be made (it is like 25 cents a cut or...

Re: Reducing Member Churn Rates

This is why I don't do contracts - you end up with one of two options - letting people out of their contracts which completely takes out the positive benefit of a contract or making people who aren't...

Re: Contracts & Cancellation Fees

Just go talk to the owner, be honest and if that person is smart they should figure out some way to let you leave happy.

I think a fair way would be to have you pay back the discount you received -...

Re: Groupon Information

Do you have a gym? If you truly believe this you are naive.

I ran 2 deals years ago when livingsocial was very different. We put them in their own classes and had a decent conversion rate on the...

Re: Groupon Information

''

You do not mix these members with group-on members because it cheapens your membership. People who paid $50 on group-on are getting the same thing as someone who paid the full $100. This also...

Re: How will the new CF Certification structure impact your gym?

If you are going to a seminar just so you can put it on your bio, you are misguided. I know coaches with 5+ certifications that can't coach a lick. It just means they paid and went to...

Re: Awesome location without heating

I wouldn't touch it. I am guessing we have pretty similar winters - if anything yours are worse.

I have forgotten the heat a few times over the years. Forget the fact you would have to worry about...

Re: New box and mirrors

I would pull them down also.

A big part of it is the image you want to project - I chose to go the opposite of a globo gym - no mirrors, black floors that you are allowed to write on with chalk,...

Re: New box and mirrors

Sell them.

Painting takes a day or 2 and a few hundred bucks, if you are sweating having to paint your walls, then you have some big surprises coming your way if you want to have a successful gym.

Re: Wodify Question

You can't have your information at both gyms.

They are kept separate. I am pretty sure this is right because when someone joins my gym that used to go to another gym with wodify. Wodify has me...

Re: Carrying Protein/Supplements

Progenex's wholesale program sucks. It requires a certain average monthly amount spent each quarter to decide your discount. You start at like 22% and then it bases your discount going forward off...

Re: ASCAP emails about music in gym

If you use the search function you will find multiple threads on ASCAP but nothing concrete in any of them.

They do seem to be targeting Crossfits. It also seems like the rep is compensated for...

Re: Seeking input from owners of boxes

Great idea. Wrong market if you ask me.

Take this idea and make it for the globo-gyms.

The community of Crossfit makes it so you can easily find a gym by googling crossfit in the area and then...

Re: New gym - Class hours

I started off with Monday Weds Friday at 6:30 AM and 6:30 PM and Saturday at 10. This was over 3 years ago.

I started in the same exact size you are starting and I had 0 members when I signed the...

Re: Managing different levels of athletes: open gym or class only?

In the beginning I said no to letting people workout outside of the class for this reason exactly. Over time, we have been able to develop classes that challenge beginners and advanced. The...

Re: things to know when opening up an affiliate

I am coming from a slightly different angle than Bryan and Brendan.

I think if you are coming in with a overhead and bills to pay and no clients, then you messed up in the planning stage. I am more...

Re: CrossFit gym layout design

I used to use all wall mounts and now have switched to free standing rigs for the most part in the gym. It definitely depends on your space and how it is laid out.

When I got my wall mounts 6 feet...

I agree with almost everything everyone said. One thing I don't is this

Re: Locking in mats

That's odd, I am in New Jersey so we are going from 10 degrees to 100 degrees and I never saw any change in the mats. Maybe they were put in, during the shrunken stage and expanded even closer in...

I was using 4x6 stall mats at the time and those things do not expand or shrink.

Re: Youngest affiliate with a gym..

I was 21 when I opened mine. I am so glad I did as it saved me from a life of sitting at a desk of a big financial company.
