I do work with them to its just different cause they don't spin....deadlifts like mark said are awesome for grip work...I think they are just good to have something different plus lets you check one...

it seems like the bar hit you at the top of the thigh instead of the "crease" maybe causing a little trouble on bar path...also maybe try thinking of scooping the bar so to speak on the end of last...
