1.5" is probably ideal. I have a 2" PVC pipe and you get a incredible forearm pump when benching with it.

Awesome Mike! How do you think just a solid 1.25" rod would be with no 1.5" sleeve over it? Then just glue 1.5" slots for the bands. Too stiff you think?

You could get a 2 inch diameter PVC pipe and get the same effect. Only difference is you can not load it up with as much weight as a Bamboo bar. I used a PVC pipe through for my shoulder rehab after...
