Re: Hydration supplements

I'm a big fan of Nuun tablets. You simply drop a tablet into your water bottle and you're good-to-go. I like Nuun tablets because they don't have any sugar in them, yet still have a pleasant taste....

Re: Crossfit and intense studying

I have found CrossFit to work very well in conjunction with preparing for two bar exams. I did CrossFit while preparing for the New York bar exam in 2009 and while preparing for the Massachusetts...

Re: Did Rippetoe get CrossFit right?

You guys are mis-characterizing "The Hopper" theory of training. It's not simply drawing workouts/movements out of a hopper. Instead, under "The Hopper" theory, you are asked to identify the three...

Re: Multiple sessions?

Oly + strength + conditioning is a lot to handle in one session. It's difficult to put full effort into all three pieces in one session. I've heard some intelligent trainers (C.J. Martin from...

Re: Universities Using CrossFit for Training

Rather than trying to bring "CrossFit" to your school, why not focus on the individual components? See if you can get a few Concept 2 rowing machines in the gym. See if you can get some decent...

Re: Crossfit Invitational 2013 USA vs. World

Lucas Parker (Canada) would have been a good pick. Lacee Kovacs (Europe), too. And, I think many of us yearn to see Mikko Salo go head-to-head with America's best.

Re: Thumbs around pull up bar during competition?

I agree that the most important component of the "gymnastics hook grip" is having your pinky knuckle on top of the bar. I disagree that thumb positioning is irrelevant. I believe that it is...

Re: Thumbs around pull up bar during competition?

I agree that it seems like an odd rule. That being said, I have seen similar saftey-based rules at other local competitions, such as controling yourself all the way down the rope on a rope climb.

Re: 2013 Open, Regionals and Games Thread

I wouldn't be suprised if they brought out the Ski Ergs from Concept 2 as part of an event, similar to how they brought out Watt bikes in 2011.

Re: My Unoffical Guide to Starting CFFB

It's not so much the lack of skills programming that would be an issue for a Games competitor following CrossFit Football. It's the lack of aerobic training. Most CrossFit Football conditioning...

Re: Doing your own thing at a box?

I truly believe that Globo Gyms are going to adapt very soon to remedy this problem. Once the Gold's Gyms and Planet Fitnesses of the world realize that they get add a ton of members by installing a...

Re: Doing your own thing at a box?

This question brings to light what I believe may someday soon undercut the affiliate model. There are a ton of us out there that want to follow our own programming, but affiliates, for the most...

Re: Low bar vs. High Bar, once again

Coach Coffee ends his article by stating:

"In my opinion the very best test and developer of real leg strength is the full front squat with the back strongly arched."

I'm just curious why he...

The "Real" Coach Burgener 10 x 3 Squat Program

I'm in the final week of Coach Burgener's 12-week squat program ("the 10 x 3"). The basic gist is that you squat once a week and front squat once a week, usually in a 10 x 3 format. There are a few...

Re: 2013 Open, Regionals and Games Thread

Switching gears a bit, I just wanted to talk a bit about high-rep deadlifting in CrossFit competitions. There has already been discussion about the discrepancy in judging across Regions, but I was...

Re: Programming for regionals.

Wow, if you can squat over 400, deadlift over 500, and run a mile in under 6 minutes, then you definitely have Regionals potential. It sounds like you just need to more exposure to the "sport." By...

Re: Maximum Aerobic Power (MAP) Work on Airdyne (30/30)

Thank you, Jason! And, do you try to hold a certain wattage or number of calories across all of the intervals?

Re: What does a "good box" mean to you?

I see it as borderline "malpractice" for an Affiliate not to include a warm-up as part of its class. I can't believe that there are affiliates out there that have members warm-up on their own before...

Re: Improving handstand push ups?

1. Dips. I find dips to have a ton of carry-over to HSPUs. As your dip numbers improve, so do your HSPU numbers. Bill Starr recommends being able to complete 4 sets of 20 unweighted reps before...

Maximum Aerobic Power (MAP) Work on Airdyne (30/30)

I would like to begin incorporating Maximum Aerobic Power work on the Airdyne. I see that many folks -- most notably, OPT -- recommend 30/30 work, i.e., 30 seconds on/30 seconds off for 20-30...

Re: Rhabdo is very real

"More" may not be better, but it seems almost necessary at this point to remain competitive in CrossFit. It takes a ton of work to build the gymnastics volume that these guys and girls are building....

Kettlebell Finish (Smooth vs. Textured)

I recently used a Rogue kettlebell and really liked the texture of the handle. Rogue refers to it as a "matte black powder coat finish" and claims that this finish holds chalk well. I definitely...

Re: Focusing on Oly lifting after GSLP

Bill Starr, an old-school coach, is big into incorporating strict pressing (including dips) into any Olympic Weightlifting routine. He admits that presses and dips were much more relevant when the...

Re: Core Work before and after training

Yes! I often finish a training day by doing some sets of toes-to-bar. I can usually manage a few sets of 15 reps. However, the other day I could only manage about 11 or 12 reps, and they quickly...
