I am not an engineer, but I would not build a system similar to the pic you linked. It would not be strong enough to support all of that weight unbraced.

Tom,

Assuming the bars on each side are level with each other, you could easily just span the whole gap with a bar system. This could be easily done with Speed Rail fittings and pipe.
