Pukey the Clown
Howdy folks,

I have a question about Pukey. I puke or near puke on every single metcon workout. Is that normal? I don't mind it, because I've always been a puker on intense workouts, but most often I work out at a commercial gym, and I get enough weird looks/interference as it is without puking on the rowing machine/squat rack/plyo boxes. I find myself having to stop and collect myself so I don't blow chunks, and that messes with my time and my ability to train my body to push through the pain. Does this go away over time in the system, or will it continue as I my fitness improves, and I continually attempt new PRs?

Uh . . . no.

Not "normal".

Not necessarily bad, but I hope you also have a home gym. It's hard to imagine NOT getting kicked out of a GloboGym with that pattern.

If I were you, I'd want to know "why" this was happening. Do you really go that hard on every metcon workout (absolute total maximum effort)?

If so, well, yeah, you might bring yourself near to puking every time out, and your ability to push that hard is kind of amazing (and definitely not "normal"). But probably not a problem (except to your workout partners).

I guess I'd be concerned if it happened at other times, too. Do you get motion sickness easily? Or vomit at other times (not workouts)? It's possible you have something slightly . . . well, "different" (I was going to say "weird") going on with your vagus nerve or other physiology.

If it's not otherwise bothering you, I wouldn't worry too much. Might talk to your doctor at your next annual physical (you *do* get those, yes?).

Perhaps you're drinking too much water prior to/during your workout or eating too much too soon beforehand?

In response to your posts, I have tried every variety of food and water combinations as you could imagine in my 12 or so years of sports and working out. It even happened when I wrestled after eating basically no food for several days to make weight.

I don't get motion sick. I've wondered if it is some kind of defense mechanism thing, when runs or workouts get pretty difficult. I've thought about going to see a doctor about it, but I'm afraid they will just tell me not to work out so hard. That isn't going to cut it.

Hmm. Yes. I can just see the scene:

Crossfitter saunters into doc's office. Doc gives him the once over, notes slightly propostrous level of physical fitness and arches his eyebrows.

"So, what seems to be the problem, son?"

"Well, you see, I keep on throwing up when I work out."

"Aha. Well, could you tell me about the last time this happened?"

"No problemo, doc. See, first I ran a mile, then did 150 pullups, then I barfed, then I did 150 pushups, then I barfed again, then I did 150 squats, then I ran another mile, then I barfed again."

Doc backs up several feet, and picks up the phone.

"Uh, yes, right, um, actually, I'm just going to have a couple specialists come in to talk to you about that. In fact they're going to take you directly to a nice, quiet training facility to have some tests done, get all the help you need - "

Doc continues in undertones on the phone:

"Yes, hello, is that the Maytree Mental Health Institute? Great. Could you send over the wagon? Great - and four or five extra guys? Maybe with a tranquilizer gun, would you? Thanks. This guy might be dangerous."

In my experience, docs can have a little troble making sense of things like CrossFit.

Tranquilizers have no effect on good Crossfitters. :stir:

My doctor is uber-unhealthy to my untrained eye as well. I just need to seek out a Crossfit doctor maybe.

You may want to see a doctor. One of my clients always felt like puking after a workout that I put him through. We've been working together for about a month now so it didn't make sense that he was still getting nauseous and dizzy during/after our workouts. It turns out he has some condition with his heart that prevents his heart rate to decrease slowly. In other words, once he stops working, his heart rate drops drastically.

I don't know if he has to take medication, but he does drink a diet coke during the workout, and I force him to slowly recover his HR on a treadmill after each session. He did tell me though that it isn't a serious condition. Also, the doc told him that nothing bad will ever happen to him if he continues to workout other than feeling like he is going to puke.
