Self Protection Blog

This is my first post in quite some time, but I thought this may interest CrossFitters.

Wayne Roy has recently started a self protection blog, one that focuses on the ‘soft skills’ of self defence. It’s Primal Protection (http://www.itsprimalprotection.com/) includes posts on:

• Primal attack ritual
• Looking like a hard target
• Protecting your family
• Defensive driving tactics
• Primal threat indicators
• Handling threats and intimidation
• Plus a number of others

Although Wayne is primarily known as the person who brought Bujinkan Ninjutsu to Australia and New Zealand, he has long had an interest in the broader aspects of self protection.

Wayne updates the blog on a regular basis so check it frequently once you’ve had the chance to read through the existing articles.

I hope you get something of value out of it.

With respect

My apologies, it is WFS. I can't seem to edit my original post though, just to indicate up front that it is ... any hints?

There's only a short window for editing posts. After that, you can't get back into them.

Two more updates at It's Primal Protection (http://www.itsprimalprotection.com/ - suitable for work/family viewing)

If you're confronted, give them The Finger - using primal threat indicators to your advantage
The Second Wave - dealing with police, courts and the law.

Wayne has recently updated the Primal Protection blog with a piece about adrenaline, some important information to know about if you get involved in a confrontation.

Should mention how men and women respond differently to adrenaline.

Re: Self Protection Blog

Wayne,

In the books I've read I've not seen anything that mentions that. Can you elaborate and point me to a source for further research please.

Thanks.

Re: Self Protection Blog

From things I've read, which I don't have have handy right now, is while both sexes release adrenaline the manner in which they do so differs. Men tend to have the big surge all at once while women tend to slowly build it up. I know in classes I took with Rory Miller he has spoken of this and I've witness it in sparring.

So both sexes will experience what you described, men will experience it much quicker then women. Which leads to things while men lose fine motor control at the start of the fight women can maintain this for quite a while during a fight and may not have the effects until after the fight is over.

I also recall reading one study that showed that when placed under stress the brain activity of men and women where much different. The parts of the part of the brain dealing with fight or flight (often called the hind brain) were showing increased activity whereas in women it is the limbic brain showing the increase.

Wayne,

Thanks for the information, interesting stuff.

If you come across the first hand source material for it then please let me know, I'll be interested to read it.

A long awaited update on the blog, this time about improvised weapons, specifically a rolled-up magazine.

As before it's WFS.

Enjoy.
