I just started Crossfit a week ago and I'm trying to use CF to train for the upcoming rugby season. I play for U of Maryland and we have a very competitive team and I'm hoping to make the move from B-side to A-side.

I'm a pretty lean guy so In addition to the WOD's I'm doing various O-lifts M-W-F in a weight gaining fashion (3 sets, 8-12 reps kind of deal) and some other various "traditional" weight lifting.

Wish me luck!

McGuiness is an excellent rugby name. There are a lot of current and former ruggers here. I wish to hell I'd had CF when I played. Search the threads; a lot of guys keep online workout logs. Good luck.

Hey Kevin, welcome aboard!

I'm currently working as a Strength and Conditioning Coach for an A Grade Rugby side in South Australia. I've been incorporating quite a few CF style workouts into the team training sessions.

A word of advice - ir you're looking to put on some mass, rather than adding 'traditional weight training' to CrossFit, try employing the ME Black Box protocol and really knuckle down on your nutrition. The major difference between the guys who succeed in building mass and those that don't is what they put into their mouths.

There's plenty of great threads in this forum about both the ME Black Box protocol, and also the Zone diet.

Good luck with your endeavours mate, if you want any more detailed info on what I do with my guys for Rugby prep either drop me a PM or email me at: [][/email]

I'll second Gant on McGuinness being a fantastic rugby name. I'm also a college rugger, and I started CrossFit to train for the fall season about eight weeks ago. So far so good, I've made some real good progress.
Depending on position, you'll want to modify the WOD a little bit. I'm a forward, so I have been doing the ME Black Box format of CF. I'm also incorporating more short distance field sprints and shuttle runs, things you don't see in any WOD but that are important for rugby.
Try joining a mens' league for the summer if you have the time and you aren't burnt out by the WOD. You can learn a lot from guys that have been playing forever.

Yea I'm actually playing on a sevens team in my area right now. Tuesday and Thursday's, the WOD turns into two hours of 7 on 7 touch. And I'm going to start incorporating the Blackbox workout tomorrow.

Thank you for all your input guys!
