My elbows are having trouble getting too heavy and maxing on pull-ups, but I haven't had too much of a problem staying around the 10-rep range.

So, what's the heaviest you've hit on weighted pull-ups for 10 reps? Heaviest you've seen or have a video of (or whatever)? I'm interested in what the record is (and especially what the GA record is, since I doubt I'm setting any national records). It should be a pretty fair contest among weight classes.

I just got my 10 second straddle front lever hold after 2 months of training for it. I can tell you, I am on cloud 9. Probably, because I am 68 and did not expect that I could get there.

Here is how I got there (link is work and family safe):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rncGa8wC4X4

I suggest a competition so I (and I hope you) can get to cloud 10, where I will be able to do a 10 second FL and BL hold (straddle is OK) and a 30 second free hand stand. Only 2 rules. Share your training tips and how silly goals like this add to the quality of your life.

I am sure, it won't take you until you are 68 to accomplish this.

Fyi. I have no gymnastics background. Right now, I can not even do one handstand pushup (wall assisted).
This month's contribution from Neil and Ron at Crossfit Scotland should be a little less daunting. Keep your eyes on the Affiliate Blog here (WFS) on the first of the month for full details.

Charlottesville SuperFit Games 2010

I wanted to share information about our Charlottesville, Virginia CrossFit-style games (http://charlottesvillesuperfit.wordpress.com/) (WFS)....

I wanted to share information about our Charlottesville, Virginia CrossFit-style games (WFS).

We’re pleased to announce the Charlottesville Super Fit Games 2010. Inspired by CrossFit Charlottesville and the CrossFit Games, we decided to hold our first local competition. We’ll be splitting proceeds between the Wounded Warrior Project and a local charity that will be announced sometime in December.

Games Idea

We believe being fit means being able to do well across a variety of different physical tests. As such, we’ve designed a competition that tests people for all-around skills. It will be super fun to watch and we’ll label our winners Charlottesville’s Super Fit!

Games Date

The event will take place on Saturday, January 30th, 2010. We will start things off at 7AM and athletes will receive their schedules 24 hours before competition starts. We’ll target our awards ceremony at 7PM.

Games Format

The games will be incorporate a variety of different skill sets and be scaled to any level athlete. We will incorporate standard CrossFit movements in workouts that will be selected to test athletes in strength, endurance and skilled movements. We will announce the 3 individual events 48 hours prior to the competition. We will hold a final 4th event for the top male and female finishers in the regular 3 events.

Sample Workout Formats

Event 1: 3 Rounds of Row 500 Meters, 21 Squat Cleans, 21 Burpees

Event 2: 1 Rep Max Deadlift

Event 3: Run 800 Meters, 50 Double Unders, 50 Overhead Squats, Run 800 Meters

Games Scoring

First and foremost the games are about raising money for our charities and having fun. Athletes that do the best overall will win the games. Scoring will be described in more details when we announce the events, but the best performing athlete in each event will score 100% on the event and the remaining athletes will be scored as a % of that movement.

We will have a prize basket for our winners from our sponsors.

Entrance

Games will be open to all level athletes over the age of 16. We encourage athletes to be familiar with different fitness domains. We will do our best to scale the even to all levels. Entrance fee is $40 and will go up to $55 the beginning of December. Entrance will include a fancy, tri-blend t-shirt. All athletes will be required to sign a waiver which will be provided at the event. Event participants will be capped at 100.

Games Location

The games will be held rain or shine at CrossFit Charlottesville at 1304 East Market Street, Suite S. It’s located on the back side of the UTZ/Linen building at the intersection of Meade and East Market. We are across from the cemetery place and Jinx’s BBQ. Take your first right on East Market once you cross Meade. Go around back for parking. Spectating spots are available; bring a donation if you wish to spectate.

Buy Tickets

Tickets can be purchased through our events page. CLICK HERE TO PURCHASE TICKETS (WFS)!

Charities

Wounded Warrior Project: Exists to raise awareness and enlist the public’s aid for the needs of severely injured service men and women, to help severely injured service members aid and assist each other, and to provide unique, direct programs and services to meet the needs of severely injured service members.

Local Charity: We’re accepting recommendations for a local charity. Email us at games@crossfitcharlottesville.com with suggestions.

Sponsors

If you want to sponsor this event, please contact us at games@crossfitcharlottesville.com or at 434.260.0209. Ideas for sponsorship include subsidizing t-shirts, prize packages and/or event day food/water donation. We have lots of open wall space for your brand and will have the fittest people in the area competing in the event.

I read this article in the NY Times yesterday, and it made me mad. I have run three marathons, but would certainly be considered a plodder. I ran one with my father, a disabled Vietnam vet who felt the need to do something challenging before turning 60.

Every time I go to a CrossFit box, I see only encouragement for those putting out an honest effort, regardless of their time. I personally don't see how someone finishing slower than me threatens my effort. How insecure can these people be? I can't imagine someone finishing Fran in 2 minutes and then turning around and berating someone with a 10 minute Fran time for "disrespecting the effort."

How does this article fit with your views of elite fitness? I personally would love to have one of these "elite" marathoners in my box for a WOD.
