Here is a challenge I am running into as a newer trainer with a growing clientel...

Some clients get really mad when they cannot complete a round without resting alot and whining. They may even DNF a wod.

Other clients get upset with themselves, and if a female, start to get teary-eyed. "It's too hard!"

Now I am not a hand holder or a hard guy, and I am thinking I need to do something other than encourage with "no quitting!" or "you can do it - push!"

How do you handle these situations generally?
Thx!

Hey guys we are upgrading facilities and moving from 800 sq feet to 6000. I am wondering if there are any suggestions out there for a paint color on the inside. We want the gym to be all encompassing we are running family classes etc so we don't want to paint the walls red or black. We don't want it to look like a dungeon. Right now it's a dingy off white color so we definantly need an upgrade. Thanks for the help!

as i don't have many clients, i miss the ones who have fallen by the wayside... but the ones i do have right now really "get it" -- they have a great attitude, they show up on time, they LISTEN to instruction and try hard to learn proper form, and they APPRECIATE what we're doing. it's SOOOOO satisfying to work with them! especially in contrast to the job i'm leaving, which (like so many jobs) was hugely frustrating...

it's such a bummer when you have people who really need to get in shape and they just won't stick to a program that could turn their lives around... but these clients who "get it" make this work fun and extremely satisfying. gotta get as many of 'em as i can!

those of you who run affiliates -- have you had to do anything special to develop the kind of atmosphere that attracts those folks? any suggestions?

We are doing the garage gym thing. Just us two and we have enough of most things. Friends over for the Sunday WOD may start to get dicey, though.

Getting multiples of equipment is off in the future.

For Fight Gone Bad or similar workouts, we just switch stations.

How do you creatively handle couplet and triplet workouts for time? Some athletes have a faster pace than others.

I do appreciate your experience and expertise. :notworth: Thanks!

Ciao,

I just wanted to let all of you who are running gyms know that anyone can now create their own gym on Beyond the Whiteboard.

We recognize that many gyms using the CrossFit methodology are not currently affiliated for one reason or another. We want to support your growth as part of the CrossFit community, and hopefully our service will help in getting many of you to a place where you can become Affiliates. Our gym started off in the garage, and we hope you will have as much success in this community as we have.

We refer to Non-Affiliate gyms as "Garage Gyms" on the site, but any gym (or group of workout partners) using the CrossFit methodology can use this feature. Your members will have to pay their own fees ($3/month). If you become a CrossFit Affiliate, you will have the option to pay for your members at a heavily discounted rate.

To Create your Gym: (Affiliates sign-up here: Affiliate Sign-up(WFS))

1. You need a Beyond the Whiteboard user account. (Sign up here if you don't have one: Sign-up (WFS))

2. Log in and navigate to "gyms"=>"New Garage Gym"

3. Enter your gym information

4. Then you will be the Admin of your new gym, and you can invite members by going to "admin"=>"members"=>"invite"

Hey all my name is Collin Thompson and I'm a freshman at Oregon State University studying Exercise Science, majoring in athletic training. I've been following Crossfit and the crossfit variations for a few years now, and I just absolutely love it. I just finished an intro class that gives all the EXSS students an overview of all the fields offered in the department and representative from each came in and spoke about their specific career and whatnot and none really intrigued me the same way the crossfit community has. I've been so curious as to what it would be like to own/operate a CF affiliated gym and/or work directly for Crossfit. Clearly the Crossfit industry has picked up some major momentum over the last few years, but will that continue? Is Crossfit something worth considering investing a lifetime towards? I've heard all the shpeel about people changing careers/occupations 4-7 times in their lives, but just for discussion-sake, does Crossfit offer a concrete career-path in the fitness industry?

Thanks so much for any feedback!

Hey everyone!

So we finally opened!

*sigh

It has been a hectic and crazy experience between dealing with the town, general contractors that tried to extort 10 grand before finishing the work, equipment coming in broken or not what was ordered, etc.

But we are open!

We had our open house for the past two days for people to come in and walk around. Primary forms of advertising involved front page banners to 3 local papers and me walking around and posting flyers to cars parked in permitted lots (ie. people who live in the area as opposed to people who work in the area).

My primary competition within a 20 minute radius is 0. There are a few yoga studios and boxing studios, but nothing that can be considered a "gym." The ones that are closest are an LA Fitness, The Edge, and Equinox. Most memberships range from $60-$160 a month - just to get inside the door.

We have more than 60 spaces of free off street parking, 4800sq ft space that is divided up into a yoga/barre room, entry way, locker rooms with showers, CrossFit training room, and a spin room. I have the option to expand to another 15,000 square feet.

My training team includes a head of Yoga, head of Barre, and head of Spin. I have one front desk person, and then me. I have been unable to find anyone in the area that I would feel safe having as another trainer (no trainers in my area want to teach Olympic lifts - one even said squatting below parallel is not safe.....).

So how did things go?

Well, Saturday we had 15 people come through - all great feedback and thoughts. All said they had to go home and talk to their significant others. Today, we had 12 people come through and of the total 27 that have come through - we have sold 12 memberships!

What I have found effective is that I have multiple tiers of memberships ranging from the open floor only to the unlimited group session rate. Having the multiple tiers and the flexibility to change their rates midway through is welcome. In addition, all of my instructors receive a commission for selling memberships. Everyone receives 10% on anything that they sell whether it is memberships or training, etc. This has been the best in helping the trainers bring in their own clients and having them sign up. Lastly, offering an opening special for paying for 6 months and receiving 6 months free has helped me already cover rent.

Hiccups of the day: Credit Card machine did not work for the first 4 hours until Cablevision came out and corrected the problem at the pole. Other than that - everything was great!

With all of this being said, we are looking forward to a great future of training our new clients!
