Well, I finally got a set of rings (WFS):pepper:; and have quickly realized that I am in need of an outdoor station to swing from. My question is this: Is there a standard width you guys use, or does it vary from person to person? I am 6'5'', and have a wingspan of about 6'7'', so I need a decent spread for when, God willing, I am able to do an Iron Cross. Should I give myself a foot of clearance on each side, 2 feet? What do you guys think?

I am on a corner lot and my back yard is quite open for all to see. I will most likely only go with one width/bar and just make a way to climb up to the bar to do kips, instead of adding more for my neighbors to look at. I will probably end up drilling a secondary hole and insert a pole as needed for lower work/kips. I have (2) 16' 6x6's from overhead temporary service poles (from a job wiring a house in the country) that I will use for my uprights. What do you all use for your bar, black iron pipe from Lowe's?

I must say these things are addictive; and fun! I said to myself that I would start out slow and just do some pull-ups, dips, and a few other basic things to get used to them. Well, before I knew it I was doing upside down pull-ups, so much fun, haha. I can already tell that these are going to help me make major strides forward in my core/upper body strength.

Any input you guys have would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your time.

Does anyone have experience with the two wall-mount pullup rigs that are available through Rogue? We are working to equip a new affiliate and are weighing our options for pullup systems. Given our space (~850 sqft), a wall-mount system seems to be the most appropriate to save some space... Does the P-3 system have enough distance from the wall to allow for a kipping/butterfly pullup? Are these setups sturdy enough for 3-4 athletes at a time? Any feedback is appreciated!

Hello all,

I've been doing a lot of researching before posting this, so I apologize if I missed a previous post answering my idea. The idea below is inspired by all of the great threads on home made squat and power racks.

I'm going to go through a SS cycle as soon as I get set up with a rack. Due to financial crappiness :( I will be using my metal sawhorses as a spotter (same yellow ones seen in other posts) after bolting wood to the top, and making a very simple rack. Now for the idea...

I'd love anyone's best, educated thoughts on this one. I'm putting my gym together in my basement, which has 8 ft exactly from the cement floor to the bottom of the exposed floor joists above. I'm thinking of laminating (glue and screw) two sets of 2x6 lumber (with holes drilled at 2-2.5" centers for bar hooks) that have about a 3' 2x6 foot at the bottom (for balance and a place to store unused plates for added floor friction), then is bolted somehow to the joists above for rigidity.

Long story short: 2 side by side legs of 2x6 lumber from floor bolted to ceiling with holes for adjustable height hook placement.

Thanks for your help

I think we're about ready for some beta testing on our new timer app for the iPhone/ iPod Touch.

It's got a stopwatch, a countdown timer, and an interval timer complete with Tabata and FGB presets. We reviewed the other similar apps available and improved on features that we thought would better serve the user.

This timer app is just a precursor to a full CrossFit geared app that will be coming later, but we wanted to get something out there while we're finishing up the full meal deal.

So we're looking for 10 or so testers to help us get the bugs out, though I think we've gotten most taken care of. If you're interested drop me a PM and I'll get you the details. We will need an ID number off your phone in order to set the profile to function on your device...so keep that in mind when you're deciding to volunteer. If you don't want to give that number out then this won't work for you.

"The two-armed Kettlebell swing is a great exercise and for that we purchased Pavel's Tsatsouline's Kettlebell set from Dragon Door Enterprises. The set includes a 36, 53, and 72 pound Kettlebell. With the exception of the two-armed swing most of the Kettlebell exercises have been more novelty than productive. Additionally, most of the exercises featured on Pavel's videotape can be equally or better facilitated with dumbbells than the Kettlebell. Still, we recommend getting a set. The competitions have been a blast. We'll frequently pit two athletes against one another to see who can keep swinging the big one overhead for the best time. "
The CrossFit Journal
Just wondering...has this officially shifted since the above statement was published? There are quite a few KB articles and videos out on the CF journal site, so I was wondering if Coach has revised his conclusion. Note that I'm not trying to start a KB vs. DB war, just wondering about the official stance.
Best regards,

Have searched high and low. To cover my garage 6m x 6m it's $1500 with crappy 6mm horse mats. Hardware store said they can get me 20mm rubber but it will cost $880 for 1.2m 10m roll, so still works out about the same.

Ebay has the 13mm gym tiles that look pretty solid for $39 not including shipping which is going to work out pretty expensive too.

Would prefer to cover whole floor so no concrete dust keeps coming off and I can keep it nice and clean.

Anyone found anything a bit cheaper and still thick enough? Was hoping for 20mm, don't want to crack my concrete if I miss a snatch or something!

Sorry to post on this one again, lots of searching and can’t find a specific answer to this one.

I’m building my outdoor set up for pull ups, I wanted to have one pull up bar between two poles, and between the 2nd and 3rd poles have a much higher one to hang rings off.

How high will I need bar to be so the 6’ tall hubby can do a MU from hang on it with the rings? And is it possible to get poles long enough for this and will they wobble or will I need a different set up for something high enough? I was planning 1/3 in the ground, concreted in.

So, if someone who has actually done it can advise pole/post diameter and length for both that would be great. Was going to go with 1” bars.

Cheers,
